What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol belongs to a class of polyphenolic compounds called stilbenes. It is produces by plants to fight stress, injury, UV rays of the sun and fungal infections. You can find Resveratrol in grape skins, red wine, peanuts, scots pine, eastern white pine, giant knotwood, Japanese knotwood and in blueberries.  

Resveratrol was first discovered in 1940 when it was extracted from the hellebore roots. In 1963 it was also found in a Chinese medicinal plant called Polygonum Cuspidatum. In 1992 the phenomenon of the French paradox was identified wherein Resveratrol in red wine consumed by the French was found to be the cause of their sound cardiovascular health despite their fat rich diet.  

In 2006 the Harvard research scientists studied the impact of Resveratrol on obese mice and found that Resveratrol fed mice had lower incidence of heart diseases, diabetes and ailments associated with obesity. These mice also had the stamina of Olympic level athletes. In 2008 the anti aging benefits and life span increasing powers of Resveratrol were confirmed by the same team of researchers.

What are the health benefits of Resveratrol? 

Resveratrol activates the longevity enzyme called SIRT 1. By increasing these enzymes Resveratrol enhances the life of the human body cells. Resveratrol diminishes the deposit of Triglycerides in the arteries thus effectively lowering cholesterol. Resveratrol contains huge quantities of antioxidants that prevent oxidation in the body and damage of the cell DNA and other macromolecules.  

Resveratrol reduces the risk of stroke by preventing oxidative stress. Resveratrol can fight cancer. Its antioxidants have a chemo preventative capacity for this purpose. Resveratrol also fights cancer by causing the production of a tumor-suppressor protein called FOXO3A. Resveratrol strengthens the body’s immunity system. The compound is an anti inflammatory and aids prevention of heart diseases and cancer due to this property. 

Resveratrol is an anti aging agent that prevents age related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. The other health benefits of Resveratrol include prevention of arthritis, improvement of hearing, fighting psoriasis and crohn’s disease, protection of the colon, liver, lungs and kidneys from disease.  

Resveratrol acts as a phyto estrogen in post menopausal women thus protecting their cardio vascular system from diseases. Resveratrol also prevents osteoporosis in post menopausal women by switching on the bone strengthening genes and switching off bone damaging genes. 

What are the Resveratrol side effects? 

Resveratrol is a blood thinner. It can also cause diarrhea in some sensitive individuals. Nursing and pregnant women should exercise caution with regard to Resveratrol intake. Resveratrol side effects are overall very limited.

How to consume Resveratrol?

Resveratrol capsules and Resveratrol powder forms contain the beneficial antioxidants of Trans Resveratrol in concentrated form. The minimum recommended dosage is 250mg per day. The maximum dosage advised by health experts is 500mg per day.
