Resveratrol Supplement: Sources and Availability in different foods

A red wine anti-oxidant is a talk of the town these days. This red wine anti-aging anti-oxidant can be the key of all of the red wine benefits to human health. There can be sitting a possible answer to “French paradox”. French people are known to have most fatty diet with a substantial use of alcohol yet live longer and heart healthy. This observation led scientists and nutritionist to peep in to French cuisine and lifestyle. The conclusion of the research was that there is something in the wine which makes a unique combination and keeps the consumer’s heart remarkably healthy and skin wrinkle free up to longer years. Upon a long quest and hard work, that ‘something” had been recovered and named “Resveratrol”. So baby! Have one or two glasses full of wine and enjoy a healthy heart and ever lasting youth. …..oh I forget to tell you that you might get a ticket on your driving license… So drink responsibly. May be we can find a way out to reap the goodness of red wine without having a hangover.

Let’s find out where from it comes to the red wine?

Grapes! Actually grapes are the source of the red wine anti-oxidant. It is mainly noticed in the wine, I think because of its greater concentrations in the wine. Resvertrol is found in the skin and seeds of grapes. The production is also dependent of the varieties and climatic conditions in which it is grown. It is synthesized as a defense system of the plants. So the concentrations were found higher in the varieties grown, in temperate zones, like “Muscadina grapes”. Similarly red and purple grapes have higher concentrations of resveratrol than any other varieties. Trans-resveratrol, a highly desired form of this anti-oxidant, was found highest when Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and Muscadina varieties were used.

In grape and grape juice, it bounds to a molecule of glucose and forms pieced which is a less effective form of the resveratrol. In the process of wine making there are certain chemical reactions which converts the piceid into resveratrol molecule, thus increases the anti-oxidant concentration way higher than the grape juices.

Is Grape the only source?
Well…The answer is no.

"Resveratrol" is a chemical found well spread in nature because it is a result of stress to plant like fungal and bacterial infections. So it is noticed in a number of plants like eucalyptus, mulberry, blue berry and peanuts. Though, the concentration and the form are matter of extensive research. An herbaceous perennial plant found in Japan “Japanese knotweed” is an excellent source of resveratrol and being used in the production of resveratrol supplements. Anti-oxidant capacities are measured with a method called oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC). ORAC levels of grapes are found 739 units, while in the supplements these units have increased to 1700.

To get the red wine anti-aging compound in optimum quantities and best suitable form your best bet is to get a resveratrol supplement.

Caution should be taken while choosing the supplement if you are on any medication regimen related to coagulation
